They were not dependent on the plantation system trade was huge in the south. Don't forget only 6% of Americans kept slaves before the Civil War so to say slave trading was big would not be true. The issue was taxation, the North was worried the South would become economically independent so they overtaxed the South to secession and unconstitutional action of war.
