OpenStudy (anonymous):

and that's called an absolute value function and basically it just means the distance the number is from 0 -17 and 17 are both 17 units away from 0 just in opp directions so the abs value can never return neg values so if it has just an abs value with an x and the answer is a neg number that doesn't exist
