what does x equal in the following question? 2(x + $3.50)= $19.80

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Work your way through it. We have to isolate x. First, we need to divide 2 from both sides to cancel it out from the left: \[\frac{2(x + $3.50)}{2} = \frac{$19.80}{2}\] x + $3.50 = $9.9 Now subtract 3.50 from both sides, or 3.5. x + $3.50 - $3.50 = $9.9 - $3.50 x = 6.4
