If f(x) = 4x - 1 and g(x) = 3x + 4, what is f(g(x)) ?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

With problems like these, whatever is on the inside of the function to find (in this case, it's "g(x)"), that is the part that you will need to substitute into the x variable of the other function. Understand so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so it would be fx= 4(3x+4)-1? Just to warn you I am terrible at math haha :)

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Not as much as many, I assure you. And you're correct. Now, next step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome! So now we have to compute the numbers that match. uhmmm or do we need to use distributive property?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Distributive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok 12x +16-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12x+15

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Yep!, but don't forget to state that f(x) is equal to it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow! that was easier than I thought! Thank you for guiding me through this! :)

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Welcome! Just remember that no matter what variables are used, the one on the inside of the other is what is substituted as x.
