1. Without the first amendment, the government could establish a national religion. 2. When the U.S. Constitution was signed on Sept. 17, 1787, it did not contain the essential freedoms now outlined in the Bill of Rights, because many of the Framers viewed their inclusion as unnecessary. 3. Citizens have the right to come together and assemble private or public groups. This is the basis for many groups today. 4. It covers several enumerated rights, including Free Speech, Free press, Freedom of Religion, Freedom to assemble, and Freedom to petition the government. 5. It was first applied to the states through the 14th Amendment in Schenck v. New York (1925). 6. It covers several implied rights like freedom of association, freedom to travel, freedom to participate in politics, freedom to donate to political candidates, and a limited right to anonymity.
