OpenStudy (elizabeths):

What are alveoli? What is their function?

OpenStudy (elizabeths):

@SeaTurtle113

OpenStudy (koikkara):

Alveoli are tiny sacs within our lungs that allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to move between the lungs and bloodstream.

thomaster (thomaster):

They're tiny air sacs with a very thin cell wall which allows gas exchange between the air in your lungs and the blood in your capillaries. Perhaps this attached image will explain it better.

OpenStudy (koikkara):

The main function of the alveoli is storage of air for a shorter period which permits absorption of oxygen into the blood.

OpenStudy (koikkara):

In Simple...The main function of alveoli is gaseous exchange. It is in the alveoli structure through which exchange of gases takes place during respiration process.
