The test to detect the presence of a liver disorder is 98% accurate for a person having the disease and 97% accurate for a person not having the disease. If 3.5% of the people in a given population actually have the disorder, what is the probability that a randomly chosen person gets an incorrect diagnosis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please Help, Im stuck on this online Alg 2 class and me and math are not friends.. Can someone help me out?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

draw the probability tree

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

If 3.5% of the people in a given population actually have the disorder

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is a probability tree?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i do a table ...

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

did u skip the class, or "probability tree" is not part of ur syllabus ha ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

we can do contingency table also

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is making no sense to me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its a recovery class online, when I did the tutorial it didn't give me notes on this.... -_-

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\(\large \begin{array}{|l|l|} \hline Test~result&has ~disease& no~ disease\\ \hline Positive&&\\ \hline Negative& &\\ \hline \end{array} \)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

fill in the table

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

the test is 98% accurate for a person having the disease

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

that means, If the person really has a disease, then : the test shows positive 98% of the time the test shows negative 2% of the time right ?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\( \large \begin{array}{|l|l|} \hline Test~result&has ~disease& no~ disease\\ \hline Positive&\color{red}{98\%}&\\ \hline Negative& \color{red}{2\%}&\\ \hline \end{array} \)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

97% accurate for a person not having the disease that means if the person has no disease, then : the test shows positive 3% of the time the test shows negative 97% of the time

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

\( \large \begin{array}{|l|l|} \hline Test~result&has ~disease& no~ disease\\ \hline Positive&\color{red}{98\%}&\color{red}{3\%}\\ \hline Negative& \color{red}{2\%}&\color{red}{97\%}\\ \hline \end{array} \)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

see if the table makes sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you just spoke in a different language to me...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

* to me in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for your help but I got a whole test to do and I don't what to bother you with all those questions... @ganeshie8

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

wats ur native language ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

English lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Math was always my weakest subject...

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

lol okay, try again and see if the table makes sense, once you're are at peace with the table, rest is very easy to do...

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

btw, the table only captures the information GIVEN already to us in the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Honestly I just guessed and passed that question, I have a deadline that I have to meet to graduate... im on a different question Lol

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

cool :) good luck wid remaining questions !!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks, I really appreciate your effort in trying to help me :)

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

np :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you like a teacher in math or something?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

noo, im also weak in math... trying to catchup....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Really??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You fooled me lol

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

hahah i try not to :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol where do you live?

ganeshie8 (ganeshie8):

india, wbu ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

India?? wow that's really cool, I live in Florida...

OpenStudy (anonymous):
