3 - (2x - 5) < -4(x + 2) ---- distribute through the parenthesis 3 - 2x + 5 < -4x - 8 --- combine like terms 8 - 2x < -4x - 8 --- add 4x to both sides 8 - 2x + 4x < -8 --- subtract 8 from both sides -2x + 4x < -8 - 8 --- combine like terms 2x < -16 --- divide both sides by 2 x < - 8
