How did modernization cause Japan to become an imperialist power?
Black people
Well through common knowledge, if you have an increasing economy and an increasingly industrialized society, your country will benefit from more advanced technology in all aspects of society. Particular to Japan was their developement in military advancement that allowed for steel warships aswell as advanced guns and cannons. When the Japanese ventured to imperialize they attacked vunerable areas that were not so technologically advanced such as Manchuria in east asia and most countries in South East Asia.
Japan needed resources to continue its industrial drive -- factories need materials, and to run those factories requires resources like oil for power. The country itself doesn't have a lot of those resources, even today, and one of the solutions was to invade and literally take what they needed from countries like China and Indonesia. Japan wanted to unite East Asia under one power -- itself -- mostly to supply its hungry industries and modernization efforts.
