Any tips on quadratic word problem ?

I'm having a test tomorrow

you may not be able to factor a quadratic all the time,
but the quadratic formula always works :

\(\large x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}\)

memorize that, and also practice a bit how to multiply two binomials like below using FOIL :

\((2x+3)(3x-1)\)

for example :
\(x^2 - 2 = 0\)
