Comes from the fact that Jim had sold his beloved watch to buy Della's hair combs, and Della has sold her beloved hair to buy a watch chain for Jims watch. So the ironic part of this story is they both sold their beloved things to buy things for the beloved things they just sold (lol thats confusing but the truth).
