2x + y = 7 => y = 7 - 2x and the other equation is 5x + y = 9 y = 9 - 5x now equating the values of y we get 7 - 2x = 9 - 5x => -5x +2x = -9 +7 => -3x = -2 => x = 2/3 now plug this value of x in any of the equation for y :D
