Review #2 1. Critic: Simon Reynolds 2. Title of Critique: ’Jaws’ Review 3. Provide a basic outline of the critic’s article. Simon talks about how Jaws is a traumatic event and yet it is exciting. He then talks about how the movie plays off. He also talks about the great white mechanic shark malfunctions and can look a little fake but overall it was a good movie and this movie cannot be topped. He describes this movie as gory and it gives you jumpy shocks and they don’t make them like this anymore. 4. Summarize his or her evaluation of the film in one sentence. Simon Reynolds thinks this film was a great movie and it is an exciting thriller but it could use some technical upgrades to help the movie seem more real. 5. Choose specific language from the review that helps you understand the film critic's attitude. Explain how those quotations create the author's tone you hear as you read the critique. The critic’s attitude is realistic because he talks about the good and the bad things about the movie Jaws. Words from the article that helps me understand the author’s attitude are “quaint”, “trauma”, “malfunctioning mechanical fish”, “crowd-pleasing”, “gory”, “fidgety”, and “energetic”. This creates the authors tone because he is honest with what he says. 6. How does this review compare with the first review you read? Identify two similarities and at least one difference between the two articles. This review and the first review are similar because they both have positive things to say about the movie Jaws, and they describe the movie as “one of the greatest thrillers of all time”. The difference between the two is that this review includes the negative parts of the movie such as the malfunctioning shark. After reading these reviews, do you have an interest in watching the film or an appreciation for the craft of writing a critique? Explain why or why not. Yes after reading these reviews it gives me an interest in watching the movie. This is because the critics both said some positive things that encouraged me to watch the movie and I would also like to try to see if I can identify the mechanical shark.
