Throughout the novel he uses description to paint a picture for the readers to make them feel like they're there. This can be seen in the opening and the end of the novel as he describes the brush and the surrounding area. He also uses it to describe characters and lighting. The lighting creates effect by suggesting something to the reader. For example, darker lighting could suggest that something bad is going to happen.
