What is keratin Keratin is an extremely strong protein that is a major component in skin, hair, nails, hooves, horns, and teeth What role does it play in the organs of the integumentary system ? Keratin is a protein that gives skin its strength and flexibility and waterproofs the skin surface What is the function of the stratum corneum The stratum corneum serves an important barrier function by keeping molecules from passing into and out of the skin, thus protecting the lower layers of skin The stratum corneum protects you from viruses, bacteria and other antigens. It also prevents excessive water loss :D
