The British learned a lesson in the American Revolution. It is better sometimes to grant Independence than to fight a war. The English passed laws that encouraged self government where ever they went. Canada and Australia became independent in WW1. Indian politics had evolved. As Mahatma Gandhi said, "Brittan can not rule a nation of 500 million, if the 500 million do not want to be ruled".
