How do I do this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (phi):

there are a few ways to go... one way is "flip" both sides (so that x-2 is up top)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that the easiest way?

OpenStudy (phi):

try it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you flip? Multiply x-2 by both sides?

OpenStudy (phi):

multiplying both sides by (x-2) also works. That another way to go.

OpenStudy (phi):

by flip, I mean make each side the reciprocal. a/b becomes b/a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so it would be x-2/8 = 1/4?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. next multiply both sides by 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x-2 = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then x = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That is?

OpenStudy (phi):

after x-2= 2 I would add +2 to both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is there a way to check this?

OpenStudy (phi):

like this x-2 +2 = 2 + 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank!

OpenStudy (phi):

what did you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its not done? lol

OpenStudy (phi):

x is not zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where did the plus 2 come from?

OpenStudy (phi):

do you remember you got to x-2 = 2 ? what is the next step ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. Solving for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

By subtracting the 2?

OpenStudy (phi):

If you subtract 2 , you have to do that to both sides x-2 -2 = 2 - 2 the right side simplifies to 0 the left side is not *just* x by itself.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh...

OpenStudy (phi):

I would add +2 to both sides because that will make x by itself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. That makes sense.
