A hotel lobby can seat 14 people at chairs and loveseats. The lobby has a total of 11 pieces of furniture for seating. Assuming a chair seats 1 person and a loveseat seats 2, how many loveseats are in the lobby?

well intuitively you could reason that there are 3 less pieces of furniture than people
thus 3 pieces are taking on an extra person

mathematically you would say
x + 2y = 14
x + y = 11

subtract the equations
y = 3
