What happens when the kidney secretes hydrogen ions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The kidneys are supposed to secrete hydrogen ions in appropriate amounts to maintain Ph balance. The kidneys maintain acid-base homeostasis by regulating the pH of the blood plasma. Gains and losses of acid and base must be balanced. The chemical reactions go this way. The H+ combines with HCO3- to form carbonic acid. Luminal carbonic anhydrase enzymatically converts H2CO3 into H2O(water) and CO2(carbon dioxide) . CO2 freely diffuses into the cell :D
