how do you find the lateral area of the square pyramid in the pic below?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (ranga):

You have 1 square base and 4 identical triangular sides. Lateral surface area (lateral meaning side) involves only the 4 triangular sides. And since they are identical, just find the area of one triangle and multiply it by 4.

what is the formula @ranga

OpenStudy (ranga):

Area of a triangle = 1/2 * base * height.

OpenStudy (ranga):

Since there are 4 triangles, you will have to multiply by 4 to find the lateral surface area. LSA = 4 * 1/2 * base * height = 2 * base * height. From the diagram, base of triangle = 8m; height of triangle = 22m. plug in the numbers. Answer will have the units m^2.
