It is actually asking "What's the pilot like?" because it uses "es" and not "esta". If it were saying "Como esta el piloto" then it would be "How is the pilot" or "How is the pilot feeling?" So, you must say "El piloto es..."

simpático - sympathetic (like happy most of the time)
serio - serious
divertido - fun
alto - tall
bajo - short
antipatico - Unpleasant (like depressed, mad, dissapointed most of the time)
guapo - handsome
feo - ugly
