Keeli was asked to approximate the square root of 38 to the nearest whole number. Her work is shown here. Analyze her work, describing what she did correctly and what she did incorrectly. Provide the correct approximation, showing and explaining your work.
If you need to type the square root symbol (for example, ), either type it in words, as in "the square root of 36," or use the common abbreviation "sqrt," as in "sqrt(36)" or "sqrt 36." thirty-eight is between the two perfect squares thirty-six and sixty-four. thirty-eight is closer to thirty-six than it is to sixty-four. So Square root of thirty-eight is approximately equal to six.
First off, 38 is between the perfect squares 36 and 49.
38 is however closer to 36 than 49
This means that the square root of 38 is approximately equal to 6.
So, I'll break it down. Just give me a sec.
ok :)
What she did correctly: 38 is closer to to 36, and 38 is approximately equal to 6 What she did incorrectly: 38 is between the two perfect squares 36 and 64 I'll post the rest in a second.
i though the perfect squares are 38 and 49...
38 is between the perfect squares 36 and 49, not 64.\[\sqrt{36}=6\] \[\sqrt{49}=7\] Because 38 is closer to the perfect square 36, that means that the approximation would be 6.
I think that's the rest of what you need. Also, if 38 was a perfect square, then there would be no approximation.
thank you VERY much!!!! i was stuck on this forever. *gives out medal*
No problem. :)
