Describe the different shapes formed by the cross sections of a sphere

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

Show the cross sections?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, describe them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I guess that could work

OpenStudy (ranga):

Any cross section through a sphere is a circle. If the cross section passes through the center of the sphere then the circle formed by the cross section will have the maximum diameter equal to the diameter of the sphere. In all other cross sections, the circle will have a lesser diameter than the diameter of the sphere. In the extreme case of the cross section being a tangent to the sphere, the cross section will be a point.
