People became disillusioned. After the promise and hope offered by the Kennedy image, Johnson provided a image of incompetence in Vietnam. His domestic policy was where he wanted to spend his energy and he sought to not lose Vietnam, instead of win.
Nixon understood what needed to be done to win in Vietnam but his suspicious personality made him an easy target for the growing anti-war movement. The fact that he kept some aspects of the war secret did not help. When a couple of his re-election campaign staffers screwed up an unnecessary burglary at Democrat offices in the Watergate Hotel, his ego and untrusting nature led him to involve himself and his staff in the cover up. When it all came out (it always does) it eroded confidence in his presidency.
Add to that a Vice-President forced to resign because of corruption related to when he was governor of Maryland. The president's critic's smelled blood in the water and went after the president, exposing every fact or fiction they could make stick and forced Nixon out of office.
President Ford, was an unelected President. His decision to pardon Nixon was probably the best thing to start the healing but fed into the idea of backroom deals.
Anti-war/anti-Nixon forces were not be satisfied with a military victory in Vietnam after the Nixon negotiated 1972 Peace Accords. Troops came home to a population convinced they were losers. Unbridled "peace" forces convinced Congress to pull all support for our ally South Vietnam. With out the money and equipment we promised before leaving, the South was unable with stand the communist backed North.
So people were left with the image of the American embassy in Saigon falling to the Viet Cong. The feeling of failure and disgust in their government was overwelming.
