OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Procedure for multiplying two numbers in scientific notation: 1) create new exponent by adding the exponents of the two numbers being multiplied 2) create new mantissa by multiplying the mantissae of the two numbers being multiplied 3) if the absolute value of the mantissa is less than 1, or greater than 10, you need to "normalize" the number by multiplying or dividing by 10 until it is in that range, remembering to adjust the exponent accordingly: subtract 1 from the exponent each time you multiply, or add 1 each time you divide.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

By the way, if you're not going to typeset your work, you need to at least put in a ^ to indicate an exponent, such as 3.7 x 10^6
