Ok so the surface area of a cube is the sum of the area of each side There are 6 sides in a cube The top and the bottom of the cube have the exact same area and each opposite side basically has the same area. So basically we need to find the area of 3 sides.
Lets start with the top of the cube |dw:1397061835155:dw| The area of the rectangle is y*z and then we must subtract the hole in the middle which is a square So the area is y*z-(x*x)=32*24-(4*4)=752 Hence we can conclude that the area of the bottom and top side of the cube is 752 cm^2
Then lets find the area of one of the shaded side. Keep in mind that the opposite side which isnt shown in the picture has the same area as the shaded one |dw:1397062021226:dw| So the area of the shaded region is y*x=32*4=128 cm^2
