Parth (parthkohli):

Neither is it possible to do extracurricular stuff in India, nor is it viable to do anything other than your academics when you're studying way too much. I've got very good grades, but I have no history of extracurricular activities. I can take care of the SATs later. But otherwise, why would outside universities accept a student such as me?

OpenStudy (kayne):

Hi @ParthKohli :) helping people on OS is already an extracurricular activity :) I think that you should check out the requirements of the universities you wanna apply for. While extracurricular activities may give an overview of your personality, you may request for an interview when you submit your application. If you're really passionate about what you wanna study, the enthusiasm in your voice during the convo will certainly translate into something good for you. Besides, when you apply for studies in the US, you have to write an essay which I guess depicts loads about you - personality, creativity etc. Try contacting people from the admission office of the universities of interest to you. They are very nice people and very helpful for sure. I think that @Eric and @Preetha have better pieces of advice when it comes to this particular topic.

There are many factors that could get you into a university. It depends on the connections you have, what school you want to go to, what country you want to go to school in. Check with the requirements of the University you want to attend, and make sure you fulfill those. High SAT and ACT Scores are excellent for getting into the college or university of your choice. Also, it helps to have a good application. If you have an attention grabbing creative college resume, it is more likely for them to remember you and accept you. Openstudy could be considered an extra-curricular activity. It would be a pretty good thing to list on the resume that you are an Openstudy ambassador. Depending on what school you go to, they might want to interview you. You should probably prepare for these interviews by making sure you know your goals and what you want to do. Another thing is that you should always make sure you meet the date requirements or due dates. You shouldn't turn in anything late, if anything, on time or early. That looks really good to the college you are applying to. Hope this helps. :D

@ParthKohli Actually, I'm a Kendriya Vidyalaya student, Who represented KVS South Zone(INDIA) , in National Level Basket Ball Team during year 2005-2007. And my report card Keeps a negative history in subjects as well as in discipline field too. It is like India do provide support to extracurricular activities but it’s a rare part in most of the educational Institutions. In India, extracurricular activities are encouraged when they find the talented guys through various activities. Well, that's not a matter. If u r really good and have enough confidence to showcase your abilities then Ofcourse you will be supported to a large extent by both school authorities and the Village/panchayat itself. I am proud to say, that even though extracurricular activities didn't had much affect in my studies it did made me hope for better future. Keeping an History of arrears and other records, i too had a chance with DRDO, as one among the six students from my Institute to work for the Satellite program for students conducted by IITM ( during the period they designed an satellite before the launch, few years back) So, i don't think India is bad in extracurricular Activities either. If India was then how could India have Strong batsman in Indian Cricket team itself ? Buddy, so just showcase those people in institute or let them know what you are good at, with strong support from your friends, is only what u need.. Best of luck !

Any sport or social institution can be used as an extra curricular activity. People have been involved in clubs, fundraising for charities, and many other things. If there is nothing in the area, what can be started there? Women's group? Teens group? After school tutoring group? And as others have pointed out, OS itself is a way of doing this.
