The endpoints of a segment are (4, 2) and (–2, 2). What are the endpoints of the segment after it has been translated 6 units down?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Hello Katie! Firstly, answer me this please: Which axis is the one that represents vertical placement/change?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y axis

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Correct! Secondly, in an ordered pair, which number represents how far up or down a point is placed? The x or y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

I"m afraid not. The x part tells you how far left or right the point is. So, now knowing that it's the y that controls the "height" of the point, all you need to do is subtract the number given (the number of points that it says it's going down) from the y part of the ordered pair. Understand?
