Point X is located at (2, −6) and point Z is located at (0, 5). Find the y value for the point Y that is located one over five the distance from point X to point Z. A) −3.6 B) −3.8 C) −4 D) −4.2

OpenStudy (ranga):

If the points were A (x1, y1) and B (x2, y2), then point C that is 1/5th of AB from point A will be at: ( x1 + (x2-x1)/5, y1 + (y2-y1)/5 ) Here they are asking only the y-value of point Z and so you need to use just the y formula.

OpenStudy (ranga):

You just need to compute y1 + (y2-y1)/5 The two points are (2,-6) and (0,5) So y1 = -6, y2= 5. Plug the numbers into y1 + (y2-y1)/5 and that will be the y-coordinate of point Y.
