Addiction is a complex disorder characterized by compulsive drug use. While each drug produces different physical effects, all abused substances share one thing in common: repeated use can alter the way the brain looks and functions.

@Whitemonsterbunny17 what abb0t said is correct, drug addiction can be a disease affects the primary areas of the brain and it can be caused by It's hereditary. Families who get exposed to drugs a lot will be drug addicts, they might pass the "addiction gene" to their children...

When does drug addiction occur?
When a person often misuses prescription drugs or over the counter drugs it will get used to it. Substances such as nicotine and cannabis because the nerons in the brain cells develop more neurotransmitters dopamine in the brain, causing the body to feel the pleasure and need of that drug in order for it to function.

Chances are, if you have a relative whose an addict, the child of that parent is more likely to become addicted due to genetics. Although, there is a chance that they may not become addicted until a certain time in their life when that addictive gene becomes active.
