How are gene and protein sequences used to classify organisms?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

because genetic sequences determine the protein products, they're sort of interchangeable. You classify organisms in terms of sequence similarity. For example, Organism 1 has sequence AAAA Organism 2 has sequence AAAG Organism 3 has sequence AAGG So organism 3 is closer to 2, and 2 is closer to 1 (because they have closer sequences).
