undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

3x3y + 12xy - 3x2y - 12y Part A: Rewrite the expression so that the GCF is factored completely.

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

firstly what is the GCF of the numbers?

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

how do i find that? I forgot sorry...

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

the greatest number which will divide into 3 , 12 = 3 right?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

now look at the variables (the letters) which letter is common to all 4 terms?

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

y right?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

oooh sorry i've slipped up here...

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

huh?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

I'm puzzled by this one

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

Ok i've got confused because of the way the terms are written first bring all the letters together 3x3y + 12xy - 3x2y - 12y = 9xy + 12xy - 6xy - 12y = 9xy + 6xy - 12y = 15xy - 12y OK now the GCF of 15xy and 12y is 3y so we get 3y(5x - 4) )

undeadknight26 (undeadknight26):

thats it?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

yes it all boils down to that

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

the way the problem was presented was a little confusing note that 3x3y = 9xy and 3x2y = 6xy
