Hey Diane, I've thought about a way we can approach this problem. Well, we know what we're trying to find in the answer choices: y^2 − 25x + 25. The first thing I think we should do is start with D and work our way up. Okay, so D is (y + 5)^2. We should expand this thing so that it'll be easier to solve. Let's see...(y + 5)(y + 5) is what we get. So now we can use distribution to solve out; and we get y^2 + 5y + 5y + 25, which all simplifies down to y^2 + 10y +25. But that isn't what we trying to find! This isn't equal to y^2 − 25x + 25!!! Ain't nobody got time for dat! Let's throw it out, and move on to C. C is saying: (y - 5)(y + 5). We can just jump right to the distribution part now. When we do, we get y^2 + 5y - 5y - 25. This is equal to: y^2 - 25. NOT RIGHT! We're still lookin' for y^2 − 25x + 25. So cast Choice C into the fires of Mount Doom! We must move on! Choice B says: (y - 5)^2. In expanded form, it means: (y - 5)(y - 5). Use distribution to multiply it out, and we get: y^2 - 5y - 5y + 25. Simplify as much as we can, and we'll get: y^2 - 10y + 25. This is not the droid we are looking for. Choice A remains, and it is true. Looks like we've taken care of business. Best o' luck! ^_^
