Someone needs to be IP banned!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Mods, can you please forever ban whoever keeps setting up accounts with the name Raymond in them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

People are getting spammed with his tags and it is annoying them.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Preetha

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

I believe only Admins can IP Ban, in other words, Mods have to contain the problem and gather ban-able evidence in order to enact the IP Ban. It will be taken care of :) but it seems that the paperwork takes a while ;)

OpenStudy (preetha):

What is the username? And why should we ban him/her?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They had a whole bunch of different usernames with the name Raymond in them and he kept Spam tagging like at least 100 people on people's questions and then making his own questions and spam tagging.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

for example: http://openstudy.com/users/shinebrightlikeadimon#/updates/534846a3e4b0dfc5ac70b250

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Preetha Did you see the example?

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Haha! Good thing I'm not included in the spam list, I didn't get any of the notifications...

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

By the way, @shinebrightlikeadimon seems like a really nice user ! ^_^ @jigglypuff314

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Me neither. But still.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Yes; that person needs an IP ban. He/she keep making new accounts, so suspensions don't cut it. I'm curious: has the troll stopped making new accounts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For now..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you @dumbsearch2 what can i help with?

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Nothing :) @shinebrightlikeadimon Just tell me if you ever need help :)

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

I just said you were nice because I had seen the post where the troll had spammed your question, and you took it rather nicely :) I've seen a lot of grumpy askers before !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah he was out of control!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well thank you and i knew saying something mean would make him get attention so if you don't give someone attention they will eventually fly off so thats what he did at the end but i feel sad for him because what kind of person would do that like seriously were you that bored...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IDK what his motives were. LOL all I said was, "IP ban this dude!"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think Preetha saw it, but I don't know what she did.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

She won't respond. :/

thomaster (thomaster):

well... he stopped right? Banning him won't do anything. and getting someone IP banned takes a long time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plus he could easily create another account

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jigglypuff314 thank you for the nice testimonial

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IDK, but what if he does it again?

thomaster (thomaster):

then we'll ban him again...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we should just ignore him because if you give him attention he will not stop once he sees everyoe ignoring him he won't see the point of doing it and like i said he or she is doing to get attention so don't give it to them so they can leave and stop

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, good plan. :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol you can learn alot from a 13 year old lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL, so I can learn a lot from myself. XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol surround your self with people who can influence you in a good way and you'll be amazed what good things you might teach yourself

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

@thomaster Yeah, if he doesn't bother anybody. I agree with you; it's not worth the procedure. I've heard to IP ban you have to have an admin go into a database?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

guys who can answer boy problem question for me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Eh?

OpenStudy (ja1):

@dumbsearch2 I'm guessing it's like a standard ban where you have to manually input the IP into some "ban.txt" file or something in the .htaccess file

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so my friend really likes this guy and she doesn't know what to say to him so she let's me text him for her but he doesn't like her for the looks he likes her for the personality, well mine since i'm talking to him for her and when he found out he's all over me but i don't want to hurt her feelings so he keeps on texting and kiking me everytime and he just ignores her now what do i do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh..dear..O_O..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Aww.. I GTG, I'll be back later though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah i like him to but the only reason i'm not dating him it's because she likes him too and they were going to date so and she says she's fine with it but she is my best-friend so i know when she is and when she's not and she's not she only says she is so i can be happy

thomaster (thomaster):

@JA1 if it was that simple, they could easily create some tool for us. Unfortunately it's currently a lot more difficult than just putting an IP in a file, at least so I've heard.

OpenStudy (ja1):

@thomaster Really? Why would they do that, most websites can do that using the .htaccess file.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JA1 Maybe so no one would ban people incessantly?

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

seeing as someone deleted all the mass tag comments from the example above... http://openstudy.com/users/yesnoyesnoyesyesno#/updates/5348444be4b01a361877e9c0 you might wanna clear that one too?

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

#1984

OpenStudy (ja1):

@mipie13 That would be the case if it were in the hands of someone untrustworthy but the only people with access to the server files are admins. Also, @thomaster I didn't have time to get you a link but here you go: http://kb.mediatemple.net/questions/1699/Block+a+specific+IP+address+from+accessing+your+website#gs This method is simple and works on all Apache server's (although, is OpenStudy even Apache based?).

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

OpenStudy uses Jetty, an HTTP Server and Servlet container written in 100% Java. It's an Apache server, as it's dual licensed under Apache and Eclipse.

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

I did a little investigating there that lead me to my conclusion :)

OpenStudy (ja1):

@dumbsearch2 HaHa, I should of just asked you upfront ;) But this also means that we can IP ban easily with the .htaccess file, unless of course the original devs opposed it (I've found that ShadowFiend is hateful towards some methods )

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Haha, he's very opinionated, but I've noticed that there is a method to his madness ;)

OpenStudy (ja1):

@dumbsearch2 No argument there, if he says something is no good I think I'll believe him ;) (Except in having used Scala, although maybe it wasn't his doing :/ )

OpenStudy (dumbsearch2):

Well admittingly Java is very flexible. The Lift framework (what OpenStudy is using) is quite feature-rich as well.
