and at the same time..that same number should also add to itself to make -12

but the answer to the ACTUAL question IS 6 lol

So to my question...what number is it?   it would be -6

-6 times -6 is indeed 36...and -6 + -6 is again indeed -12
so we have

$$\large (x - 6)^2 = 0$$

and the answer to that IS 6
