Megan, Julia, and Caroline are on Main Street on Friday afternoon. They want to eat so they put all of their money together. Megan has d dollar. Julia has 5 less than twice as much as Megan, and Caroline, has 4 dollars than Megan. Write an algebraic expression that represents the total of their money all together. Make sure answer is in simplest form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 dollars ..what...more or less than?

OpenStudy (alina123):

4 more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok then m stands for Megan's money (2m-5)+(m+4)+m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

simplify

OpenStudy (alina123):

-1 plus 4m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is correct

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

Correct :) If you wanted to know how they got those values: then they want "all together" as in M + J + C "Megan" = M "Megan has d dollars" -> so M = d "Julia" = J "5 less than" -> (something) minus 5 that (something) would then be "twice as much as Megan" -> 2*M and since M = d -> J = 2d - 5 "Caroline" = C "4 dollars more than Megan" -> M + 4 and since M = d -> C = d + 4 plug that all in and you'll get (2d - 5) + (d + 4) + d which you would simplify

OpenStudy (alina123):

Oh so it's combing like terms when you simplify I though you had to find out how much d is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

Yep ^_^ they asked for "simplest form" so no solving involved :)

OpenStudy (alina123):

Thanks

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

Glad we could help ^_^
