How are units of measurement chosen and interpreted in formulas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, I'm not sure exactly what you're wanting to know but you have to have the same units to add/subtract terms.\[x=\frac{ 1 }{ 2 }at ^{2}+v _{0}t+x _{0}\] In this equation, each term has units of distance. Acceleration multiplied by time squared is distance, velocity multiplied by time is distance, etc.
