the scientific name for dog is Canis familiaris. the scientific name for wolf is Canis lupus. which classification groups do dogs and wolfs have in common? how can you tell they are similar organisms just by looking at their scientific name?

Since the dog i.e Canis familiaris is a subspecies of Wolf i.e Canis lupus, i think their common genus is Canis. Their scientific name will of course suggest from which family, class order and phylum it belongs to and from this information it is quite easy to tell that they are similar.
