Peristalsis is a radially symmetrical contraction of muscles which propagates in a wave down the muscular tube. In digestion, it moves food through the digestive system from the esophagus to the rectum, where waste matter is stored before being eliminated. It is the primary method by which food is moved through the digestive system from areas where it is initially acted upon by chemical compounds to areas where food is absorbed by the body and then waste is eliminated :D
