what is the symbol when using lines , rays and line segments. it looks like an upside down U

That is the intersection symbol. If you had two lines cross each other, the intersection is a single point. If you had two rays, one on top of the other, then their intersection is a line segment. There are various other examples, but the basic idea is the intersection of two geometric objects is everything that they have in common.
