No one wanted to see another war like WW2 and so the UN was formed on the basis of trying to prevent something like that from occurring again. It wasn't to stop communism -- the Soviet Union was a part of the very-exclusive Security Council and member nations were free to pick and choose how they ran themselves. All the UN did was provide an international forum for everyone to have a say and voice their concerns.
