Take a phone for example. If you really need a new phone but your current one already works, that means you want a phone. so you desire (want) a new phone.

If you already got a new phone, it isn't a want anymore or a need.
If you don't want a new phone... it isn't a need.
If you still haven't gotten a new phone, you forget it over time and realize you didn't really need it.
