Why do you think there is a basic difference between the kinds of fertilization most common in aquatic and terrestrial animals?

Terrestrial animals can't just release sperm into their environment to fertilize ggs, where as some aquatic animals can, because sperm needs water to fertilize.

Yup. Sperm needs a watery environment to travel for fertilization on an egg. For land animals it would be inside the oviducts for fertilization, for aquatic they just release it in the water, both egg and sperm.
