What created the mining boom that started with the California Gold Rush?

After James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, thousands of people rushed into California looking for gold. Basically only those miners who arrived in 1848 found the success they were looking for. After 1848, merchants were the main beneficiaries of the boom. I really hope this helps you.
