The salad bar has 15 different vegetables, 5 different salad dressings, and 6 different types of toppings. How many different combinations of salads can be created with one vegetable, one dressing, and one topping?
15 * 5 * 6 If you're not sure why, wh|dw:1397535774115:dw|
This is a partial tree diagram. V1...V15 are the 15 different vegetables, S1...S5 are the different salad dressings T1...T6 are the different toppings So, if you selected vegetable #15, and salad dressing #1, you have 6 different choices of toppings. you selected vegetable #15, and salad dressing #2, you have 6 different choices of toppings as well (I didn't draw this, but you have these options). Do the same for each salad dressing (all 5 of them), and you realize you have 5 * 6 choices among salad dressings and toppings. Do the same analogy by going back one level in the tree to the 15 vegetables... you can have 15 different vegetables for all 5*6 combinations of (dressings + toppings). So, 15 * 5 * 6
thank you very much
