I am writing a paper in my writing class about how schools shootings is a problem, but I need ideas on how we can stop these shootings in schools. Any ideas?
Well there is the option of armed guards at your school. However, I think the single School Resource Officer or Deputy should be the only person with a weapon on a school campus. There, I've given you an idea. Lets hear one from you, and I'll give you another one then.
would strengthening gun laws work?
I don't think so. The problem with strengthening a law, or making a new one, is that it only stops honest people like You, and Me. Criminals will still find a way to get their hands on guns. Take Oakland, Ca for example. I've heard that any sort of automatic weapon is illegal there, yet you still hear of drive by shootings with fully automatic AK-47's being used. ----- Another option for your question could be to identify the kids that are feeling hopeless, and let them know that someone cares. When the Columbine shooting happened, it was because these two loners had been left to rot by the school and community. They had indicators in their diaries, actions, and thoughts that a shooting would happen, but nobody paid attention. If they would have gotten the help they needed, maybe that shooting wouldn't have happened. Can you think of another way shootings could be stopped?
have metal detectors in school, but I think it will be too much
Well, don't discount it before you try it. I'll let you in on a little secret. I wasn't always a straight arrow like I am now. I had a criminal record as a kid, and I got expelled from school, a couple of months after getting Baker Acted. I went to a secondary school called Journeys Academy. Basically this school was the last stop before jail. I saw fights with the school deputy, kids trying to escape over the razor wire around the lunch area, and more, but there was never an issue of a weapon in the school. You know why? Because we had a metal detector, and then security would go over a second time with a much more sensitive handheld detector. I always felt safe at that school, because I knew any weapons would get confiscated at the door. However, your right, that idea would probably not work on a large scale like most middle/high schools are. We can stop these shootings if the parents of kids would take an active role in their child's life. I guarantee you that any school shooter in the last 20 years, the parents of the shooter were not involved in the shooters life when the shooting occurred. I could probably find numerous studies that say that parents who take an active role in their kids life, leads the kid down the right path, but I'm too lazy to go do that at 1:38 in the morning... lol Any other ideas?
not really, which one do you think will be better to write about?
Take your pick of which one you want to write about. Its your paper, and the best work comes from your own thoughts.
