Reptiles scales protect them from harm and have frequently been modified for coloration purposes or better movement (like scales on crocodiles and alligators). A diaphragm is the thin muscle that is responsible for the movements necessary to cause the lungs to inhale or exhale. It also separates the check and abdominal cavities.
