In your own words, describe chromosomes, genes, and DNA. Recall that traits are observable characteristics of an individual. Explain why individuals in a population have different observable traits. Use your observation skills to find two examples of traits that you have inherited.

Before knowing what a chromosome or gene is you have to know what DNA. Okay so we all know that a "gene" is what we inherit for our parents. The real question is "how?" Well, each one of our cells has a nucleus which is basically the "brain" or "control center" of the cell. Within the nucleus of the cell is the DNA molecule which is within a threaded structure called a chromosome. Every one of the chromosomes is made up of DNA wrapped around proteins which help support its structure. Basically the protein is the skeleton of the chromosome.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. Thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Try defining a gene

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its the easiest :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, more specifically how do we inherit a gene.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright.. I'm sort of writing out now. I think I got the hang of it. I put on my paper. Strands of DNA contain sections called genes, each gene may determine a single trait. Does that sound right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I basically wrote this out so far. Chromosomes are strands on DNA containing multiple sections of genes. Strands of DNA contain sections called genes, each gene may determine a single trait.
