d = sqrt [(x2-x2)^2 + (y2-y1)^2]
(-5,1) x1 = -5 and y1 = 1 (3,0) x2 = 3 and y2 = 0 now just sub into the formula that douglas gave above read this and see if it helps.. http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/distance-2-points.html
