To allow only certain consumers to have access to goods and services To have access to the resources when national security is at risk To prevent prices from rising too high and to increase efficiency To prevent single suppliers from continuing to dominate a market

Monopolies are when one company controls a particular resource or development of resource. The government steps in when monopolies appear b/c otherwise, if one company could control a resource, they could charge extravagant prices. :3 So it would be to prevent single suppliers from continuing to dominate a market.
